While Pi Day is past and I already shared the irrational pie I made, I want to share one more. Of course Pi Day would not be complete without a dessert pie. I wasn’t quite sure what pie I would be making, other than Spanakopita, until I got home that evening. I had used some of my pie crust from the Homemade Pop Tarts to make a pie crust. It was just waiting for a filling. As I was putting dinner together I was going over in my brain what would be quick, easy, and delicious. The obvious answer to me was chocolate pie.
I was not going to make just any chocolate pie, but the pie that my mother grew up eating. She always calls it “Grandma’s Chocolate Pie” because her Dad’s mom made it. It is an old-fashioned, traditional style cooked pudding-like filling.
It uses a handful of ingredients and really doesn’t take that long to cook. My mother remembers it taking what felt to her young arms like an eternity. That’s because with a cooked pie filling it must be stirred constantly to prevent lumps or burning. I enlisted the help of my youngest with this task on 3.14 because I was still putting together pieces of dinner.
The best part of enlisting her help was that she recognized what she was making by the smell. It may have saved my arms a bit, too. After she had been stirring the filling for just a few minutes she said, “This smells like G’s pie”. What a brilliant observation. Then she informed me that she wasn’t going to be able to stir it the whole time. She seems to listen to her grandmother more than I had ever known. I informed D4 that she only had to stir for another 5 minutes because everything I was doing would be done. She started timing me, announcing the time regularly. Additionally, she was doing her version of color commentary on the thickness of the filling and her whisking speed.
I took over when the chocolate pie filling was starting to thicken. The heat was a bit low so I turned it up just slightly and continued whisking for another 5 minutes. It was perfect. The vanilla was added and the filling poured into the waiting pie shell.
The following morning I took a slice to my mother. She could hardly wait to heat her slice in the microwave. In her family it was usually served while still warm.
One of the reasons I enjoy cooking and baking so much has to do with history and memories. This chocolate pie reminds my mother of her childhood. I have memories of eating this same chocolate pie my whole life. It warmed my heart to know that my youngest knew this was “the” chocolate pie by smell. This is what it’s all about; making memories.

- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 full rounded tablespoons cocoa powder
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- 1 ¼ cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- Combine sugar, cocoa, flour and milk in a saucepan.
- Cook over medium low heat, stirring constantly, until thickened.
- Remove from heat and add vanilla. Stir well.
- Pour filling into a small, baked pie shell.
