Whiskey Wednesday!

Whiskey Wednesday!

Earlier this week the first blizzard of the year hit. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. The blizzard got me thinking ahead to Whiskey Wednesday.

The blizzard hit on the Sunday following Thanksgiving. My travelling family had already left for their homes to beat the snow.

In typical Kansas weather fashion the blizzard also came the day after we had a 70 degree day in November. It’s true what they say in Kansas; if you don’t like the weather wait five minutes. We got to enjoy every season in a four day period.

With the coming of the blizzard I made sure to have made preparations in case we lost power or couldn’t leave the house. In addition to extra toilet paper, bottled water and foods that could be eaten without heating them up I made sure to have Whiskey.

Whiskey is an all-around good idea to have during an emergency. First of all, it calms the nerves for anyone in a panic. Second, it has a warming effect, and third it can be used as an antiseptic.

The blizzard kept the girls out of school for a day, but did not cause any major power outages or problems for my family.

However, I’m glad that I was prepared – just in case.

With winter soon upon us I strongly suggest that you prepare for blizzard season, too. If you don’t need it there’s always another Whiskey Wednesday.

To your health!

Whiskey Wednesday

Whiskey Wednesday

William Shakespeare coined the phrase “too much of a good thing” in the 15th century. It is still valid in our world today, when there are times that excess can do harm. Here is a Whiskey Wednesday tip that will defray the harm that your excess may cause.

Whiskey Wisdom

Most cheap whiskeys and other spirits, such as gin and vodka are produced on a column still. Good whiskey is made in a pot still, which is a more precise way to cut out the distillates that make people sick – when they drink too much of a good thing.

That tip, paired with the following Whiskey Wednesday Wit will not only assist you, but also the Top Shelf Whiskey industry, as well.

Happy Whiskey Wednesday! I hope you enjoy today’s wisdom and wit!

Whiskey Wisdom

Remember Age is Just a Number. Older doesn’t always mean better, even with Scotch. If you give me the choice of drinking a sub-par fifteen year old whiskey versus a sublime younger whiskey, I’m going to have to go with the younger one. After all, it’s all about the taste. So, while there are some whiskeys that are aged to perfection, don’t get hung up on the age! After all, it really is just a number.

Whiskey Wednesday

This Whiskey Wednesday Post is going to the heart of the matter.

Wisdom

Today I am giving a bit of the history to the origin of the word whiskey (whisky).

Uisce beatha in Irish or Uisge beatha in Scottish is the literal translation in Gaelic for “water of life”. Uisce Beatha was translated from the Latin aqua vitae, used to describe spirits.

You can see why so many with Scottish or Irish heritage feel compelled, nearly obligated, to drink Irish or Scotch Whiskey. It is, after all, The Water of Life!

Whiskey Wednesday 3

Whiskey Wednesday 3

Happy Whiskey Wednesday! Let’s start with a bit of Whiskey Wisdom.

If you have ever seen wine drinkers swirl their glass and take a sniff of their wine before drinking it, it isn’t just because they are pretentious snobs.

Whiskey drinkers are also, occasionally, seen swirling the glass and sniffing it prior to drinking. There are a couple of reasons for this.

First, after a good swirl of the first pour (careful not to spill any) hold the glass up so that light shines through. You can see the liquid run down the sides. The lines of running liquid are referred to as legs. The legs on whiskey are thicker and slower, which indicates higher alcohol content. Compare your whiskey legs to wine legs sometime and you will see the difference. Trust me, my whiskey legs are definitely thicker and slower than many of my wine drinking friends legs!

Next, take a small and gentle sniff of the liquid in the glass, with your mouth slightly open. Do this directly after the swirl. This allows you to smell the alcohol, and also allow the evaporating alcohols to take their first dance on your taste buds.

While it isn’t necessary to do this, it does give you an added level of enjoyment to drinking whiskey. Plus, it looks kind of cool.

So, when you go out or stay in this Whiskey Wednesday, give a swirl and a light sniff.

Whiskey Wednesday

Whiskey Wednesday

While some people call it Hump Day, I like to call it Whiskey Wednesday!

Here is some Whiskey Wisdom for the week ~

While some people love their whiskey (or whisky) on the rocks that is not the recommended way to get the fullest flavor. This Whiskey Wednesday try to drink your whiskey neat. Adding ice dulls the flavor of whiskey by lowering the temperature inhibiting the flavor and freezing the aroma. If you feel you must, add one cube – no more.

Now for a little Whiskey Wit ~

I am not Oprah Winfrey. However, I, like Oprah, have some favorite things. One of those things is Whiskey. Many (or most) but not all Wednesdays I post fun little sayings and graphics to my Twitter and Instagram about Whiskey. After all, they don’t call it #whiskywednesday for nothing.

Honestly I do not know why I have not shared them here before. Now I am going to share several of them at once on a Saturday and then start sharing them more regularly with you on Wednesdays.

#Whiskeywednesday

I will also try to impart a bit of the wisdom I have picked up about whiskey from time to time. I assure you that it is not a wealth of knowledge. It Is a small bit of knowledge that I will share with you. Please feel free to share your whiskey knowledge with me in return.

Mostly, I hope you find a bit of humor along with a small amount of wisdom in my posts.

For example:  Only use clear distilled or spring water for ice cubes or to add to your whiskey. The chlorine and other impurities in tap water will change the taste and composition of the whiskey. Don’t do it!

So let me catch you up with a few of my #whiskeywednesday witticisms.
